The Fayette City area has been blessed since 1830 with a volunteer fire company. In 1836 a Button and Blake hand pumper was bought for the community by the local industry. In 1885 two hand drawn hose carts were bought from Gleason and Bailey Company of Seneca falls, New York. It was decided that with the growth of Fayette City that one cart be placed downtown and the second cart be placed in the town hill section. The location of those two volunteer companies was where the old borough and fire station now sits and the town hill station was between California and Liberty Streets.
In 1921 it was decided by the members of the volunteer hose companies to get a Corporation Charter and buy a motorized fire engine. On February 21, 1922 a Corporation of the First Class was granted to the Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company. In June 1923, a new shiny red Type 75, six cylinder, 100 gallon per minute rotary gear pumper was delivered from the American LaFrance Fire Engine Company, Elmira, NY. This was the first motorized engine in the Mon Valley and the second in Fayette County. The Geneses Valley VFD of Rochester, NY currently owns this engine. They have owned the engine since 1994 and have restored it for parade and display purposes. From the years 1937 thru 1972 the Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company Fire Company has bought nothing but “White Custom American LaFrance” fire engines. In 1986 the fire company broke with tradition and took delivery of a 1986 GMC Grumman, 1000 gallon per minute pumper due to American LaFrance no longer building fire engines. In February 2000, we took delivery of a 1999 Ford 4X4 brush truck built by Keystone Fire Apparatus of McKee’s Rocks, Pa. This unit replaced a 1967 Ford American LaFrance 4X4 which served our community and surrounding area for many years. In February 2001 the membership voted to replace the 1972 custom American LaFrance engine with a 1988 Pemfab engine purchased from the West Annapolis Vol. Fire Co., Annapolis, MD. This engine went into service in June of 2001. In June of 2004 Fayette City Boro Council turned over a 1991 Chevy Caprice Police Car for the use of a squad. This unit carries all of the company’s medical equipment for EMS calls. In 2004 the fire company was awarded Assistance to Firefighters Grant to replace breathing apparatus. We purchased 12 new Scott NXG2 SCBA’S and 1 RIT-Pak. If not for the grant we would not have been able to replace these units. In June 0f 2006 the Fire Company relief association purchased a 1997 Ford F-250 pickup truck to be used as a brush unit. The members of the fire company did all the work on this truck themselves from painting the unit to building the skid unit. The truck was placed in service in the fall of 2006. This unit will take some of the abuse off of the 1999 unit. Also in October of 2006 the fire company again was awarded Assistance to firefighters grant for a new Rescue/Engine. The award amount was for $285,000.00 and will be used to replace our 1986 Engine. On October 28, 2006 the members voted to purchase a 2007 Spartan/Keystone Fire Apparatus Rescue/Engine. This will be the second apparatus purchased from Keystone Fire Apparatus of McKee’s Rocks, Pa. The Apparatus is due for delivery in late August or early September of 2007. The unit will feature a 1250 GPM, 750 gal, 20 gal Class A foam, complete Hurst rescue system, seating for six, 5 SCBA seats and a 10kw generator. Dean Whitmarsh of Fairchance, Pa.currently owns the 1972 American LaFrance Custom Engine.
The Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company has two sister companies that they have helped organize. In 1936 with the help of the residents of Fairhope, the members of the Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company helped organize the Washington Twp. Volunteer Fire Department. After a disastrous fire that burned the Newell Methodist Church to the ground in October 1955, the members of the Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company recognized the need for a fire department in the community of Newell. With the help of the residents of Newell a fire department was born and grew.
From 1830 till Present the Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company has served every type of alarm conceivable, from major fires to deadly mine explosions and destructive floods. Without the dedication and generosity of the residents of Fayette City area the Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company would have never survived. We, the officers and members of the Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company, take this opportunity to thank the residents of the Fayette City Area for their gracious support. It is a privilege to serve such a fine community.
